yet another post about drinking -12 +/-

Saturday evening I was confronted with a total lack of plans, since everyone was out of town. AtlantaBuzz was not much help either, as there was just nothing going on. However, there was one event listed that looked somewhat intriguing. Because I had not experienced enough pain and suffering on MARTA during the last week and a half, I decided to check out the MARTA Pub Crawl VI. Also, I was extremely curious and wanted to find out what bars were near more esoteric stations, such as Doraville.

At about 5pm, I arrived at Underground and was amazed that people were actually there. It was unbelievably crowded. Finding the designated meeting place was a pain in the ass. On the off chance that anyone involved in management at Underground is reading this, a directory at the damn entrance would be fucking helpful.

Eventually, I managed to fight my way through the crowd and find a directory. Shortly after that I wandered into Irish Bred. I glanced around and noticed that the only people not eating there were a small group of people older than me at the bar. As I was about to bail, since there were no beautiful babies, one of the people at the bar asked, “Are you here for the Pub Crawl?” Busted! A couple of beautiful babies did show up, but they were lightweights and wandered off. After having a drink, we headed to the Five Points Station to begin our journey out to Doraville. The highlight of Five Points was the MARTA employee yelling at everyone to get on the next northbound train, because there would be no Doraville train due to single-tracking.

Forty minutes later, we arrived in Doraville and walked a block and a half to Monterrey’s, which is a small Mexican joint. Amazingly, Monterrey’s offers thirty-two ounces of Dos Equis for $3.50. I am moving to Doraville.

The next stop was Mellow Mushroom at the Brookhaven station. While I was there, I had a Terrapin Rye Pale Ale, which I discovered at the East Atlanta Beer Festival a few weeks ago. After Brookhaven, we rode to Lindbergh and had Kick-Ass Margaritas at Jalapeno’s, which was a surprisingly nice establishment. There was a definite lack of ass-kicking, but they were decent for a drink using sweet & sour mix. And the bartender was a hottie. Next, we visited the only bar on the crawl that I had been to before, which was the Vortex, located near the Midtown station. The last stop I made it to before taking the train back to my car was Rapshnitzelfrunfen* in the Renaissance near the North Avenue station.

Despite the distinct lack of beautiful babies and near arrests, this pub crawl was a great time. All you poor suckers who missed out will have another chance in August, when MARTA Pub Crawl VII is scheduled. Stay tuned to Propeller Skies for more details.

notes:

* Not the real name of the bar, because I am unable to remember that. However, the real name does start with an “R” and is a long-ass German word, so this is close enough for our purposes.
